IN CRISIS

FOCUS ON STRENGTHENING YOUTH AND FAMILIES

Youth and families make up a critical component to our community.

United Way is focused not only on intervention programs for the needy, but enrichment programs for our young people, and engaging programs for families.

For youth, we seek to partner with programs that:

- Build character
- Impart leadership
- Foster education
- Provide safe, enriching, engaging activities

- Reduce various risk factors (drug abuse,
   dropout, crime, economic dependence, etc.)

For families, we will seek to support, among other things, services that:

- Help families resolve/reduce conflicts and solve
  problems

- Increase parenting skills
- Increase health and wellness
- Increase educational opportunities

One-to-One Youth Mentoring
Partner:
Big Brothers - Big Sisters
Objective: Provide at-risk youth with a positive, adult role model to serve as a mentor, and build self-esteem, improve academic performance, and build social skills.

Community Outreach Scholarship
Partner:
YMCA
Objective: Not every family can afford fitness clubs, after-school programs, or homework help.  The YMCA provides scholarships for youth to have access to the recreational and social activities that will build character, and keep them healthy and safe in a positive environment.

Child Care
Partner:
YWCA
Objective: The YWCA is working to empower women, and eliminate racism.  Through their child care program, women are able to hold full-time employment and support themselves and their families.  Children are cared for in a nurturing, educational, and safe environment.

After-School Programming
Partner:
Boys and Girls Club
Objective: Provide a productive, safe environment for kids to grow and learn during the hours immediately following school.

Youth Enrichment through Scouting
Partners:
Virginia Skyline Council - Girl Scouts, Blue Ridge Council - Boy Scouts
Objective: Develop youth leadership skills through camps, scouting, recreational activities, educational programs, and more.
