President's Report
By Greg Hairston

It has been another exciting and challenging year for our United Way .  After 85 years, we are stronger than ever, and more committed to improving lives in Danville and Pittsylvania County than ever.  I have been proud to serve as president of this great institution we call United Way .  I look forward with much enthusiasm to another year of service.  We are engaged in some very productive and rewarding work.

I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of contributors for making such an investment in United Way .  This community has supported our efforts to build a more meaningful United Way for our times.  The work of the non-profit arena is more challenging than ever.  More agencies vie for the same scarce resources, and needs continue to mount.  This is why the efforts we are making now are so important.

I would like to thank Shahnaz Ahmed and Brian Bonar for their leadership of the 2006 campaign.  As co-chairs who stepped up on late notice, they filled the gap in perfect time.  Their efforts, along with those of the professional staff and many volunteers who supported them, generated a $906,000 campaign total.  Given the losses we suffered from job losses this past year, that is a huge achievement!

I also appreciate the efforts of Patty Grigoryev and the Community Investment Team.  This faithful group of volunteers can be credited with making sure your donations are invested in the most effective programs possible.  They spent countless hours pouring through funding applications and outcome data, and arrived at an effective plan for this year’s resource investments that will allow us and our partner organizations to continue building upon our successes of the past year.

Our organization has some outstanding individuals who have served for many years.  Our finance director, Jean Walker has served for 24 years.  Rodney Reynolds, our treasurer, has served our organization as a volunteer for over 15 years.  Thanks to Jean’s and Rodney’s skills, our organization is financially healthy, and our fiscal practices set an example of good stewardship.

I am honored to work with such an outstanding board of directors and staff.  You can be proud that your United Way has an incredibly talented, innovative, and committed board and staff.  I cannot possibly name everyone here who has made an impact on our efforts.

Finally, I would like to thank all of the United Way partner organizations for the tremendous work you do on a daily basis.  Your work is often thankless and underpaid, yet your passion is unmatched.  You are in the trenches, doing the difficult work, and your work is making a difference.  Our community is a better place for your efforts.

Let’s keep the momentum going.  We can do more.  We can be better.  Our community deserves it.  At the end of next year, let’s look back on even greater achievements and improved quality of life for our region!
